We arrived at Castel Sant'Angelo early (there was no queue) and unfortunately used our Roma Pass for free entry (in hindsight we would have paid regular price to enter and use the ability to bypass a line at another site). Lessons learned.
The castle was awesome though and it had a lot of history. (Throughout it's existence, it was a mausoleum, then part of the city wall, a fortress, a papal residence, military barracks and prison, and now a national museum). It was also great for the kids to be able to run and climb around...and the views were amazing!

These water fountains were awesome! They were all over the city and you could refill your water bottles with the best water ever! |
After the castle we were going to go to a shopping district for a picnic lunch and to look around. However, hunger got the best of us and we decided on a quick lunch and then back to the hotel for a much needed rest before heading back to the area to see St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican!
----------------------------------------------
Here is the itinerary we had for today (we use our itineraries as a baseline with plenty of wiggle room, nothing ever goes as planned but that is what makes it special!):
- 0815 - Leave for Castel Sant'Angelo (take 40 Express from Termini to Piazza Pia)
- 0900 - Castel Sant'Angelo opens
- 1030 - Break/snack, head to Coin (shopping), 15 min. walk from castle
- 1230 - Bus back to hotel to rest
- 3:30 - Head to St. Peter's Basilica (take 40 Express from Termini to Piazza Pia)
- 5:30 - Break/quick dinner
- 7:30 - Reservation for Vatican
- 10:00 - Stop for gelato on the way back to hotel
Will always be special memories for me to have explored this area with my kiddos. :)
