Rovinj, Croatia

After a failed attempt at Kamenjak we decided to head north to the town of Rovinj, the "Blue Pearl of the Adriatic," to see what we could find there....and we are so glad we did!

Rovinj was absolutely beautiful!  The people were friendly, there were tons of restaurants, boats in the harbor, shops in alleyways...the sights, sounds, smells...it was incredible!

Our first order of business was FOOD.  We were starving and the kids were getting antsy.  We picked one of the first restaurants we could find with a good view of the water because, as luck would have it, the Redbull Air Race World Championships were going on that weekend so we got to watch practice runs all day!  YES!

The kids thought this was "EPIC" (the word of our week). They loved seeing all the different "Dusty Crophoppers" zooming all over the place!

But, I digress.  Lunch.  Lunch at Restaurant Galeb was horrible.  It was the low-point of our stay in Rovinj (of our whole trip actually) but it came with good views of some airplanes so, eh.

After lunch we took the kids for some ice-cream and strolled along the promenade for a few postcards and souvenirs.  We, my daughter and I, fell in love with the stores and streets!

We decided to finish our afternoon off with a boat ride along the coastline (but not before stopping at a local Candy Bar for some sweets - and, maybe an actual bar for a mojito)!

There were several choices for boat rides/rentals along the marina and tours pretty much went out every hour or so.  We picked the next boat to leave and hopped on!

The boat ride lasted a little over an hour (we stopped to watch the air race from the water) and the kids got to "drive" the boat which they really enjoyed (I was about to have a heart attack because the rails on the boat were big enough for the kids to fall through...seriously, safety nets).

On the way home we stopped in downtown Pula to eat dinner (which was delicious) at Pompei, a pizza and pasta place.

Pretty much every restaurant we went to had a pizza, pasta, risotto, seafood, and grilled meat section on their menus.  My husband was not a fan of the grilled meats he tried while we were here (no seasoning) but all the pizzas we had were quite yummy.  We were going to get adventurous one night and order shrimp scampi but when we realized the heads were still on the shrimp we passed!  My go-to while we were here was risotto and grilled vegetables, although, I did have the tuna at the Istrian restaurant we went to and it was really good!  Dining here is VERY reasonable.  For 2-course meals (with wine and beverages) our family averaged about 35 EUR per meal and the portions were pretty hefty too...OH!  And, water is free here also (this is exciting when you pay more for a glass of water than you do for a beer in Germany).
