Pula, Croatia (Auquarium/Fort Ventura)

The weather today was not the best for a lot of the outdoorsy stuff (very windy, cool, sunshine but rainy).  We had discussed renting a boat to take the kids fishing but no one would take us out due to the wind.  Oh well, it was the perfect opportunity to hit up the Pula Aquarium located inside Fort Verudela (and less than a five min. drive from our resort)…after sleeping in, of course!  (I think I may like no-planned vacations after all).

The aquarium was really cool.  We've never been in one that’s inside a defensive fort before!  It was neat seeing the labels to each room with the different species of fish inside as well as what type of room the area was used for in the late 1800’s.  It wasn't huge but there were two levels focusing on Adriatic fish and a Marine turtle rescue center that was rehabbing five sea turtles while we were there.

It cost our family of four 24 EUR to enter and we spent about an hour and a half walking around.  Although it was windy, we headed to the rooftop for some views of downtown Pula and the sea! (There are a lot of random ruins up there so we were scared to let the kids run too free but they had fun nonetheless).

Outside of the aquarium there is a restaurant (it was closed while we were there) and a (what looked to be an abandoned) small putt-putt course (which was also closed).

We headed to Park Plaza for lunch (you know, that resort we were going to book) because we heard they had some nice restaurants and a little shopping area there.  However, they were all closed too!  I guess that is what we get for coming in low season (FYI though, every local we met said this was around the best time of year to come to beat the heat/crowds/price increases).

Instead, we headed back to the supermarket to see what we could find and we ended up getting turned around.  When we went to make a U-turn we ended up right in front of a Mexican restaurant…SCORE!  (My family loves some Mexican food, it doesn't matter what country we are in).  It ended up being pretty decent too (we might also be a little picky about said Mexican food)!

With full bellies we headed back to the hotel to regroup for our afternoon game-plan…exploring a beach and checking out that amphitheater!
