Pula, Croatia (Roman Amphitheater)

After checking out Ambrela Beach, we headed back into the city center to check out the Roman Amphitheater, a.k.a Arena of Pula, Pula’s “most famous and important monument.”

It was built during the 1st century A.D. at the same time the Colosseum in Rome was built and has been the site of gladiator fights, medieval knight tournaments, and present-day performances.  The kid’s thought it was super cool they got to see “the broken thing in Rome’s little brother.”

In the underground passages you could check out the exhibition of viticulture and olive growing in Istria.  It was neat seeing all the reconstructed machines (mills, presses, vessels) used for storing and transporting olive oil and wine!

It cost our family 13 EUR to enter.  We spent less than 30 minutes inside, and quite honestly you can see most of everything (expect the underground passages) from the outside, but it was worth the money to get a picture of our little ones pretending to be gladiators in the arena…

At this point (although the weather was still sunny) the wind picked up and it started to sprinkle so we ducked into an indoor playground, Peekaboo, to let the kids run off some more energy.

The kids LOVED Peekaboo! BONUS, it was only 9 EUR total for both our kids (parent’s play free) and we were able to eat dinner at the adjoining pizza place.  The food was awesome and a LOT for your money (we got an extra large pizza for less than 10 EUR!).  They even gave us a complimentary tasting of local herb liquors and wine….and it was goooood!
