Dachau and Berchtesgaden, Germany (Eagle's Nest)

We were very (lucky) and excited to visit the Eagle's Nest while in Berchtesgaden!

You can read more about the history of the Kehlsteinhaus HERE.

We drove from our hotel (we found driving in Berchtesgaden very easy) to the Dokumentation Obersalzberg where we found ample parking.  The museum seemed nice; however, we did not go through it ourselves.  There was small fee to enter and the documents/exhibits were in German.  Even with the audio English guide, our kids would not have appreciated it...they were more interested in the fresh snow outside!

When planning your trip, be sure to check their opening dates/times and most recent weather conditions.  We were not able to go up the day we intended on going due to unexpected snowfall on the mountain the day prior (the road is very curvy, steep, and narrow!).  You can learn more about the road HERE.

You will also have to select your time to go up to the mountain when purchasing your ticket (it cost us 30 EUR for our family).  We were able to walk up and hop on a bus about 15 min. after we got there.  They have to time the bus route(s) exactly because only one bus can fit on the road at a time, so you will have to select a time to come back down once the bus takes you to the elevator shaft (there is a ticket office, restroom, and snack shack here).  We allotted ourselves 1 1/2 hrs. and that was plenty for our family.

The only spot for buses to pass on the mountain...they were so close!
Once you have your time to come down the mountain, you can enter the tunnel that takes you to the elevator to go up.  There was a small line forming but it didn't take long  at all.

At the top we were able to enjoy some of the most amazing views we had ever seen!  The house itself has been turned into a restaurant and there is also another snack shack with table and chairs outside.  You can also take a guided tour (you have to book this separately), but it is not recommended for children.  We spent our time at the top taking in the views and playing in the snow!

When it was time to go we took the elevator down and waited at the ticket area outside the tunnel for our bus.  The kids enjoyed a small snack and had fun throwing snowballs off the cliff!

Here are some more photos from our trip:

The gorgeous weather and beautiful scenery made it hard to
imagine the horrible person/purpose behind the house.

Have you been to the Eagle's Nest?  What's your favorite memory?!
