We debated on whether to take the kids to see Dachau. However, they behaved with respect and although they asked questions (and we answered truthfully) they didn't seem to comprehend what happened here and why. I'm not sure I will ever comprehend it.
Never Forget |
We arrived later in the morning but easily found parking. There are several guided/audio tours available in different languages; however, we did not think this would be possible for us with our children. The site itself, as well as the exhibits and memorials, were very well kept and presented tastefully, but truthfully. There is a museum inside the site with several graphic images but it is well-marked (not for children under 12). My husband went through the museum while I stayed outside with the kids.
After we toured the memorial site we went back to the visitor's center to regroup. There is a cafeteria inside with snacks and drinks (Euro only, no card), as well as a book store. The staff were very friendly and the entire place was very clean. Restrooms were also free (which is sometimes rare in Europe).
We didn't necessarily enjoy our visit - I'm not sure one can enjoy something like that. But, we were glad that we went. It is an important part of history that needs to be seen, to be felt. I highly recommend going.
Never forget. Never Again.
