Annweiler, Germany (Trifels Castle)

Today we went on our first big sightseeing adventure since arriving in Europe!  We had a blast checking out two amazing castles and a nearby chestnut festival through a guided USO tour...a much needed break from the stresses of moving overseas and living in a cramped hotel room for a month with two small children!

Our first stop on the tour was to Trifels Castle in the Palatinate Forest.

"Once the "Fort Knox" of the Middle Ages, Berg Trifels was built early in the 11th century to store treasures stolen from other German rulers. Its most famous resident was King Richard the Lionhearted, who was held prisoner there in 1193. The top floor of the castle contains the rooms where King Richard was held, as well as a small museum displaying old coins and a model of Trifels as it looked in the 11th century."  -- www.everythingkmc.com

Ok, so we underestimated the whole getting uphill to the castle thing when planning on this trip with the little ones...you silly Americans with your double-stroller...but we didn't let some sore muscles and aching lungs get in the way of our "fun time"...

The castle was also home to the Crown Jewels crown, sceptor and orb.  They have replica's on display upstairs.  I think seeing these "pretties" was our daughter's favorite part!

You also get some amazing views from the top of the castle!

On the way down the hill we had some free time before loading up on the bus to head to our next stop...and there just happened to be a small winery at the bottom offering tastings...yes, please!

Now, time to head to downtown Annweiler for the Chestnut Festival!
