Luxembourg American Cemetery, Luxembourg

Today we went to the American Cemetery and Memorial in Luxembourg to pay our respects to the soldiers who perished in the Battle of the Bulge.

We were a little worried about bringing our children but we had a long talk about how special this place was and how they needed to behave.  They couldn't really understand what they were seeing but they did walk quietly and respectfully through the cemetery, which is asking a lot for a 4 yr. old and 6 yr. old who have been pent up in a car.

The site itself is very easy to get too and there is plenty of parking.  There is also a staff member present in the visitor's center who can answer any of your questions and provide you with an English brochure of the cemetery.

General Patton is buried here, as well as 5,076 other fallen heroes.  Nothing can prepare you for the wave of emotion that hits you when you see all those crosses.  Nothing.  Those men and women never came home...many of them were just kids.  It's just so hard to understand.

After our visit we wanted to take the kids into Luxembourg City for some much needed "fun time." There are lots of interesting things to see and do in the area (the Old Bridge, the world's longest casemates, Pont Adolphe, Palace of the Grand Dukes, Gothic catherdal, etc.).  However, we were not prepared for the cluster that is driving downtown Luxembourg!  It was worse that Paris.  YES, PARIS!

I hate to say it, but after driving around the same area five times and not finding parking (or a garage that our car would fit in) we threw the towel in and went home!  We'd still like to come back, but maybe we'll take the train next time!
